error message: “Connection Timeout” or “net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT”
on Google Chrome version 31 running on a Windows 7 computer.
There are a number of reasons why you are receiving this error message when visiting a specific website on your computer and it can be a software, hardware or malware issue on your computer.
You can switch-off then switch-on both your router and computer first before performing the steps or tasks mentioned below:
A. Check proxy settings
1. Go to the Google Chrome Settings by going to chrome://settings
2. Click on Show Advanced Settings…
3. Under Network, Click on Change Proxy Settings…
4. On the Internet Properties Window, click on LAN Settings.
5. On the LAN Settings window, Untick the Use a proxy server for your LAN.
6. Test connectivity.
B. Flush the DNS
1. Run command prompt as Administrator.
2. Type “ipconfig /flushdns” then hit Enter.
3. Test connectivity.
C. Remove unused browser add-ons
1. Go to the Google Chrome Settings.
2. Click on Extensions, Disable or Remove any toolbar or extensions that you don’t use or recognize.
3. Test connectivity.
D. Release and Renew IP address
1. Run command prompt as Administrator
2. Type “ipconfig /release” then hit Enter.
3. Type “ipconfig /renew” then hit Enter.
4. Test connectivity.
E. Uninstall and Reinstall Chrome
1. Uninstall Chrome in the Control Panel.
2. Reinstall Chrome through this link: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95346?hl=en.
F. Clear browsing data: cache, temporary internet files and cookies
1. Go to the Google Chrome Settings.
2. Click on History.
3. Click on Clear browsing data…
4. Click on Clear browsing data
5. Test connectivity.
G. Check Firewall Settings and Antivirus Settings
1. It would be best to check the settings of your firewall and antivirus if the website is currently blocked.
2. Try turning off both your computer Firewall and Antivirus security.
H. Uninstall any website or url filtering software
1. Go to the Control Panel then Programs and Features.
2. On the list check if you have any software that filter websites or url installed.
3. Try uninstall the software.
4. Test connectivity.
I. Check Internet Connection
1. Run command prompt as Administrator
2. Ping google.com
3. If there are no packets lost, Internet is OK.
4. Otherwise, you may contact your ISP provider
