One of the limitations of WhatsApp is that you can only use it on your phone. If you are not carrying your phone, you're stuck without WhatsApp. Well, not anymore.
WhatsApp has rolled out WhatsApp Web that lets you use WhatsApp inside a desktop browser.  Here are instructions on how to setup WhatsApp Web. However, if you are unable to use WhatsApp Web for some reason, there's another way. Read on.

Note that while this guide is for WhatsApp, you can run almost any Android app using this method. Just replace the apk file in step 5, with the apk of the Android app you want to run. Here's a good source to download apk files.
(Also see: How to Run Android Apps on a PC)
1. You're going to need an Android emulator app to accomplish this. We've tried it with Bluestacks App Player but it should work with any other emulator too. You'll also need a mobile phone to verify the WhatsApp account.
2. Download Bluestacks App Player on your computer.
3. Run the setup file to install it. During installation, Bluestacks will ask for App Store Access and App Notifications. You can uncheck both while installing.
4. Wait for the installation to finish (it takes several minutes). During the final stages of installation, Bluestacks will run in full-screen mode. Tap the diagonal line icon on the top-right to run it in windowed mode. This makes the next few steps easy.
5. Leave Bluestacks App Player running and go to your browser. Download the WhatsApp apk file.
6. Double-click the WhatsApp.apk file that's saved on your PC. The app will automatically install itself in Bluestacks App Player.
7. In Bluestacks, you'll see a grid of apps you've installed. Find and launch WhatsApp.
8. Enter your phone number and click Verify.
9. Now wait for 5 minutes as WhatsApp tries, and fails, to automatically verify using SMS.
10. After 5 minutes, WhatsApp will offer you an option for voice verification. Click Call me.

11. You'll get a phone call. Answer it and you'll hear the verification code being spoken in loop.
12. Enter the verification in WhatsApp (running in Bluestacks) and you're good to go.
13. None of your existing contacts will show up in WhatsApp if you use this method. You can still reply to any messages you receive.
14. You can add contacts individually to WhatsApp by clicking on the three dots icon on the top-right > Contacts. Click the contact icon on the top-right, next to search. These contacts will be saved locally and will not show up on other devices. You can then start sending messages to these contacts as well.
15. Any groups you're a part of will also not show up on the PC. You will have to ask the group admin to add you to the group again.
If you're hoping to use WhatsApp on both your PC and your phone at the same time, you are out of luck. One phone number can be associated with only one device at a time - your phone will stop receiving WhatsApp messages when you're using it on the desktop. Another limitation is that you can't switch between the two devices instantly. WhatsApp imposes a 20-minute delay between two verification attempts (this delay keeps increasing with each verification attempt on the same day), so keep that in mind when setting it up on any device.

Before we get to securely wiping your personal data, let's take a look at how to create backups on Windows Phone 8.
How to save data on the cloud
1. If you have an Internet connection, Windows Phone 8 lets you save backups online. For this you'll need a Microsoft account. If you've been using a Windows Phone 8 device, you should have created this during setup or while downloading apps, so this should not be a problem.
2. You will also need a OneDrive account for saving photos and videos. You can go to onedrive.com or just download the app to create this account.
3. To backup your settings, Internet Explorer favourites, and a list of installed apps, head to Settings > Backup > App list + settings > Backup > On. Tap back up now to start the backup immediately.
4. To backup text messages, head to Settings > Backup > Text messages > Text message backup > On.
5. To save your photos and videos, go to Settings > Backup > Photos. Under both sub-heads - Photos and Videos - pick either Good quality or Best quality. Photos will back up good quality on your cellular Internet connection, but best quality photos and all videos need WiFi to upload.

How to save data on your PC
1. If you prefer a local backup, you can copy paste data manually. This method doesn't save text messages or app data or settings.
2. Plug in the phone to your PC. Go to My Computer (Windows key + E) and the device will show up as a removable drive titled Windows Phone. Open it, double-click Phone and copy pictures, music, ringtones and videos from their respective folders.
How to securely wipe data
If you've locked your phone with a passcode, then it can't be unlocked by anyone who doesn't know the passcode. If someone tries to access your data, they will have to reset the phone to factory settings - which erases all of your personal content. You can also manually wipe all your data by resetting your phone. While this removes all the files it is still possible for someone to restore the deleted files. With just a few simple steps you can prevent this too.
1. Go to Settings > About > Reset your phone. Tap Yes twice to start the process.
2. When the process is complete, connect the phone to your PC and open it via My Computer as described earlier. When you double-click Windows Phone, you'll see an empty drive labelled Phone that will show the amount of free space on the device.
3. Copy large files such as HD movies and fill up the internal storage on your phone. This is similar to copying files to a pen drive.
4. Once you have filled the phone completely, delete those files. Repeat this a few times to offer yourself greater protection against someone recovering deleted data such as photos from your phone.
5. If your phone has a microSD card, repeat steps 3 and 4 with the card. When you double-click Windows Phone as described in step 3, the microSD card will show up as a separate drive labelled SD Card.

How to recover your data
To recover the photos, app settings and other files you backed up to the cloud, you need to do the following:
1. Boot your recently wiped or new Windows Phone device. Sign in with your Microsoft account.
2. Wait for some time while your Microsoft account data synchronises with the device.
3. You'll be prompted to restore your phone and be shown a list of backups available. Select the backup you want and tap Next.
4. Key in the security code, then tap Next.
5. Now just wait for the restoration to complete. Tap Next.
6. You'll be asked to enter passwords for your email and social accounts. Tap Skip (you can do it later) and then tap Done.
7. To find your saved photos and videos, just open the OneDrive app and sign in.
Transferring media files from your PC back to the phone is also simple:
1. Connect the phone to your PC via the USB cable.
2. Go to My Computer on your PC and open the Windows Phone drive as described earlier, and copy the various media files you had backed up.
That should securely wipe your data on Windows Phone. Were you able to delete all the data on your Windows Phone 8 device by following these instructions or did we miss anything? Let us know via the comments.

Micro-blogging website Twitter on Wednesday launched its app for Windows 10 Mobile smartphones, effectively updating its universal Windows 10 app for desktops and tablets. Alongside, the company also updated the desktop and tablet app to bring a new 'Dark' theme.

The Twitter app for Windows 10 Mobile brings some of the most recent features introduced on the Android and iOS apps, such as Moments and group direct messages; the ability to shoot, edit, and post video using the device's camera; the ability to share and quote a tweet, and the ability to check out Top Tweets without logging in. Additionally, users can utilise Cortana to search Twitter or send a tweet.
As for the Dark theme, Twitter said it was one of the most popular features on Twitter for Windows Phone, and thus the company has brought the feature to the updated Windows 10 app for desktops and tablets, apart from the Windows 10 Mobile app. Users can turn on the theme in Settings > Personalisation.
The updated Twitter for Windows app with Windows 10 Mobile support is available to download from the Windows Store. To be noted is that very few devices currently run Windows 10 Mobile - apart from newly launched smartphones that ran it out-of-the-box. However, Microsoft is expected to roll out the Windows 10 Mobile update for eligible older devices this month.
"When bringing the app to mobile phones we carefully considered each section of Twitter and how the user interaction translates from desktops and tablets," Twitter product designer Angela Lam said in a blog post.
"We found that 90 percent of the UI (User Interface) and interaction models could be shared from these devices to mobile phones, but there were places where we decided to make adjustments to optimise for each," Lam added.
Lam also told Windows users they can expect new features soon, "Expect more features and improvements to come on Twitter for Windows in the future. And if you have any thoughts or comments, Tweet using #twitterforwindows. We're listening!"
