Micro-blogging website Twitter on Wednesday launched its app for
Windows 10 Mobile smartphones, effectively updating its universal
Windows 10 app for desktops and tablets. Alongside, the company also
updated the desktop and tablet app to bring a new 'Dark' theme.
The
Twitter app for Windows 10 Mobile brings some of the most recent
features introduced on the Android and iOS apps, such as Moments and
group direct messages; the ability to shoot, edit, and post video using
the device's camera; the ability to share and quote a tweet, and the
ability to check out Top Tweets without logging in. Additionally, users
can utilise Cortana to search Twitter or send a tweet.
As for the Dark theme, Twitter said it was one of the most popular features on Twitter for Windows Phone, and thus the company has brought the feature to the updated Windows 10 app for desktops and tablets, apart from the Windows 10 Mobile app. Users can turn on the theme in Settings > Personalisation.
The updated Twitter for Windows app with Windows 10 Mobile support is available to download from the Windows Store. To be noted is that very few devices currently run Windows 10 Mobile - apart from newly launched smartphones that ran it out-of-the-box. However, Microsoft is expected to roll out the Windows 10 Mobile update for eligible older devices this month.
"When bringing the app to mobile phones we carefully considered each section of Twitter and how the user interaction translates from desktops and tablets," Twitter product designer Angela Lam said in a blog post.
"We found that 90 percent of the UI (User Interface) and interaction models could be shared from these devices to mobile phones, but there were places where we decided to make adjustments to optimise for each," Lam added.
Lam also told Windows users they can expect new features soon, "Expect more features and improvements to come on Twitter for Windows in the future. And if you have any thoughts or comments, Tweet using #twitterforwindows. We're listening!"
